Include family and business correspondence, 1828-1890, of Asa Holland and various Holland family members, chiefly Smithson H. Holland, Sallie Holland Duncan, and William E. Duncan, concerning family and social news, tobacco plantations in Franklin and Pittsylvania counties, and mercantile interests in Danville, Pittsylvania County, with scattered references to slaves. Also include letters, 1861-1865, from Mark Holland, William P. Holland (24th Va. Vols.), and an unidentified family member with the 42nd Va. Vols., concerning raising volunteer companies from Franklin and Bedford counties, camp life, and a slave at the front. Topics also include the 1st Battle of Manassas, capture of relatives, action in Shenandoah Valley (1862), care and purchase of horses, a snowball fight in camp (1864), comments on Grant, Lee, and Early, the capture of a Union deserter, the battles at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, hospitalization in Richmond, and camp near Lynchburg, Va. Also include correspondence, 1861-1865, of William C. Duncan conducting business for the Confederate States of America Quartermaster Corps; and Confederate commissary accounts, 1863-1865. Also include mercantile accounts, 1822-1846; list, 1850, of clerk's fees and fines in the Franklin County Circuit Court; Franklin County sheriff's receipts, 1850-1852; toll gate receipts, 1852-1857, of the Rocky Mount Turnpike Company. Also include post office reports, 1854-1860; various papers, 1858- ca. 1881, on the Hollins Institute, Allegheny College in Blue Sulphur Springs, Va., and Franklin County Schools; daybook, 1867-1868, of Bergers' store in Pittsylvania County.
